Roblox Tightens Kids' Chat – What Will Really Change?

Roblox Tightens Kids' Chat – What Will Really Change? Your child is sitting on the couch with a tablet, laughing and messaging someone in Roblox. You don't know who. Roblox is changing that now — and this time it's not a marketing promise. The new measures directly affect who children can communicate with in the game and how.
What Exactly Did Roblox Change in Chat Safety
Since 2024, Roblox has been gradually tightening chat rules for players under 13. The latest wave of changes goes even further.

Private messages are disabled by default for children under 13. Filtering works in real time — the system blocks a suspicious message before it is even sent. An unknown player cannot contact a child without parental consent. And if a child attempts to share personal information, the parent receives a notification.

For children under 13, this means significantly limited contact with strangers. For those aged 13 to 17, the rules are more lenient but still stricter than before.
Roblox Parental Controls: Set It Up in 5 Minutes
Roblox's measures are a good start. But without actively setting up parental controls, they remain only half-functional.
Log in to roblox.com and open the family account settings. Link your child's account to your email and set the correct age profile — Roblox automatically adjusts what your child sees and who they can chat with based on it. For children under 13, enable Account Restrictions, which will limit chat to verified friends only.

Finally, check who is on your child's friends list. Most parents have never done this. The whole process takes less than five minutes.
What Roblox Won't Solve for You
Roblox can filter words, but it cannot replace a conversation with a parent. Children aged 10 to 14 are vulnerable to manipulation by strangers who gradually build trust through the game. According to a 2023 Internet Watch Foundation report, a significant portion of dangerous contacts between adults and children begins in gaming chats.

No interrogation needed. Three sentences tonight are enough:
  • "Show me who you play Roblox with most often."
  • "If someone in the game suggests something strange, come to me — no questions asked."
  • "Never share your address, school, or phone number with anyone in the game."
Simply, without drama. Your child will hear it differently than if you ban them from playing.
Safety Doesn't Rest on One App
Roblox made the right move. But your children's online safety doesn't rest on one platform — it rests on a combination of good settings and open communication at home. Five minutes in the account settings and one honest conversation will do more than any filter.
